Daily Trip Plan

Day 1: Sofia – Arrival

Welcome to Sofia where 6 civilizations left their traces. You will be met by our staff and we will transfer you to your hotel. This day is a free day to enjoy Sofia on your own or to relax and refresh yourself from the journey. Dinner and overnight in Sofia.

Day 2: Sofia – Sapareva Banya – Rila Monastery – Bansko

After a breakfast in your hotel departure to Sapareva Banya – a site of shooting of the recent Shah Rukh Khan movie – “Dilwale”. Time to take pictures. Our trip continues then to Rila Monastery. You will see the largest monastery in Bulgaria – the monument is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is a true masterpiece from Bulgarian Middle Age. You will feel the special atmosphere created during the 11 centuries of its existence and will admire the green mountain surrounding the monastery. After lunch the next stop is Blagoevgrad. The old part of the city Varosha is very attractive with its houses and churches from 17th-18th centuries. In the evening we arrive in Bansko. Overnight.

Day 3: Bansko – Tour of the city and visit of the Park of the Dancing Bears

After breakfast walking tour of the city. Bansko has 130 architectural and historical monuments of culture. This is also one of the biggest Bulgarian ski resorts and this is one of the sites of shooting of the Shah Rukh Khan’s movie – “Dilwale”. Departure to the Park of the Dancing Bears. There now live bears, rescued from the humiliation of performing before paying audiences. Their new home includes forests, resembling their natural habitat, cool swimming pools, and caves for hibernation. The initial investment was supported by the Foundation of the famous French movie’s star Brigitte Bardot. Overnight in Bansko.

Day 4: Bansko – Velingrad – Plovdiv

After breakfast departure by bus to Velingrad, the spa capital of the Balkans. The road passes 1400 m above the sea level between Rila and Rhodope Mountain. You can enjoy beautiful mountain landscapes and a breath taking scenery. A brief stop in Velingrad at the board of the lake formed by largest karst spring in Bulgaria – Kleptuza. There are 100-160 year old European black pines in the Kleptuza area. Departure to Plovdiv, the second biggest city in Bulgaria. Plovdiv is also one of the oldest cities of Europe. A special Bulgarian evening in a traditional restaurant with folklore program. Overnight.

Day 5: Plovdiv – Hisarya – Starosel – Plovdiv

In the morning walking tour in Plovdiv (One of the songs of the Shah Rukh Khan’s movie – “Dilwale”, was shot here).

During your visit you will see the monuments of different civilizations – Roman (ancient Forum, Stadium and ancient Theater), Ottoman, Bulgarian. You will walk in the small streets of the old city and admire the beautiful colorful houses of rich merchants from 18th -19th century. You can capture all happy moments of your holiday with a Portrait Session in Ancient Plovdiv to make those memories last a lifetime (the cost for this would be additional).

In the afternoon, a tour by bus to Starosel and Hisarya. The Thracian Temple Complex at Starosel covers six under-hill temples, four of which are unique, as well as a few royal burials. This is the oldest ever found royal Thracian complex with a mausoleum. It dates back to the end of 5th and the beginning of 4th century BC – 2400 years old. Optional visit of Starosel wine cellar with wine tasting (additional costs involved here) or with wine workshop to create your own wine (additional costs involved here). Hisarya is one of the oldest and most popular balneological and spa centres in Bulgaria. In 293 AD the Roman Emperor Diocletian declared it a town and this marked the beginning of the construction of massive fortification walls, public buildings, baths, streets, etc. It became the third biggest town in Thracia Province. Return to Plovdiv. Time for some shopping. Overnight.

Day 6: Plovdiv – Stara Zagora

After breakfast departure to Stara Zagora. A tour of Stara Zagora. You will see the best preserved Neolithic houses in Europe- 8000 years old. Walk along the main trading street of the Roman city of Augusta Trayana, built by the Roman Emperor Trayan (98-117 AD). You will see the antic forum of this city with the remains of the amphiteater, the thermal baths, the city walls and the western gate. You will visit a private Roman residence from late Antiquity with wonderful mosaics from 4th century AD. You will visit the Museum of the religions – a unique museum with temples of 3 different religions under one roof – Thracian, Christian and Islamic. Time for shopping. Overnight in Stara Zagora.

Day 7: Stara Zagora – Kazanlak/Valley of the Roses – Valley of the Thracian Kings – Shipka – Etar – Gabrovo – Veliko Tarnovo

After breakfast depart to Kazanlak – the center of the Valley of the Roses. The Rosa Damascena, known as the Damask or Castile rose, is the greatest treasure in the region of Kazanlak and it is one of the national symbols of Bulgaria. The petals of these roses are used for the production of the famous rose oil. Our route continues through the Valley of the Thracian Kings. There is a large number of Thracian royal tombs. One of the most interesting is “Goliamata Kosmatka”. This monument of the Thracian civilization is 2500 years old (5th century BC). Departure to Etar.

The road passes near the National Park Museum Shipka (1326 m ASL). The Architectural and Ethnographic Complex Etar is our next stop. It is situated on the outskirts of the town of Gabrovo. It is an open air museum, the purpose of which is to present the architecture and lifestyle of the second half of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. 16 houses can be seen on the crafts bazaar (the central commercial street) where you can watch in real time the work of the craftsmen. Departure to Veliko Tarnovo. Overnight in Veliko Tarnovo/Arbanasi.

Day 8: Veliko Tarnovo – Sofia

After breakfast walking tour of Veliko Tarnovo and the Castle Tsarevets. Veliko Tarnovo is the former Bulgarian capital. The Second Bulgarian kingdom choose this city for its capital (12th-14th century). You will walk on the Tsarevets Hill, home to the Royal Palace and Patriarchy. You will visit the street of the crafts – Smovodskata charshia and discover the atmosphere of the 19th century. Veliko Tarnovo is also one of the sites of shooting of the Shah Rukh Khan’s movie – “Dilwale”. Departure to Sofia. Overnight in Sofia.

Day 9: Sofia – Thracian, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and Bulgarian Monuments Tour

Walking tour to the city center (about 3 hours). You will see St. Sophia church dating back to 5th-6th century AD, a monument of Bulgarian medieval civilization that gave the current name of the town. You will visit the largest cathedral Alexander Nevski with its gilded dome, the rotunda St. George from the 3th-4th century AD, Banya Bashi Mosque built in 16th century over natural thermal springs and named after the neighboring Central Baths, the city fortress – experience the atmosphere of the city, whose history dates back over 5000 years. During the tour you will see the sites of shooting of the Shah Rukh Khan’s movie – “Dilwale”. Time to explore the city on your own and for shopping. Overnight in Sofia.

Day 10: Sofia – Departure

After breakfast check out from the hotel and transfer to the airport, depending on your flight timing. End of our services – return home with unforgettable memories of Bulgaria.
